Dunfermline Abbey

Dunfermline Abbey was founded in 1072 by King David I in honour of his mother.  Robert The Bruce was buried here after his death in 1329, although his heart was later buried at Melrose Abbey.  During the Reformation in 1560 the abbey was sacked, ending the Abbey's religious community.  James VI gave the abbey to his wife, Anne of Denmark in 1587.  Charles I, the last monarch to be born in Scotland, was born here in 1600.  The Abbey was last used by Charles II some time around 1651.  To find out more click here.
